Reflections

If I have to wait much longer until you show up at my door,
I will.

Reflections of you everywhere
Even teeny tiny sized.
I’ve seen the way you visit me in
Every clever guise.

Reflections of you everywhere.
Reflections of you everywhere.

No matter what I do, I won’t
Pretend that I don’t know
You are near.

Reflections of you everywhere
Like little, glowing lights.
I watch ’em try to be like you. Just
Living out their lives.

Reflections of you everywhere.
Reflections of you everywhere.

Here with me always
These ever-changing forms.
My life devoted
Eternally yours.

If I have to wait much longer until you show up at my door,
I will.

Reflections of you everywhere
Even teeny-tiny sized.
I’ve seen the way you visit me in
Every clever guise.

Reflections of you everywhere.
Reflections of you everywhere.

“In this song I turned my deepest loneliness into a celebration. I was literally on the floor of my apartment looking up at the ceiling, feeling only pain. At this time of my life I felt so isolated that the insects became my friends. I remember opening the door to my apartment and find a large, striped beetle at my doorstep. A visitor! I struggled to find the motivation to play the guitar, but as I played these finger patterns I felt better.

The song became my staircase out of depression. People were too complex for me, and I found gratitude for the simplest presence of life that I encountered. The person I’m waiting for in the song is whomever you think it should be. Could be God. Could be a woman. Could be my father. Could be myself.

Jason Goessl contributed amazing guitar figures on this track. What you hear in the final version is an edited collage of sound clips from the recording session. Jason has a tremendous gift for expressing himself with a volume pedal. Some of the sound clips are playing backwards. Producer Peter Fosso is a big fan of backwards guitar, and I think he mentioned this seventeen times during our working relationship. For Pete’s sake, I had to make sure there was backwards guitar somewhere on the album!

The drums and bass on this song enhance the drama beautifully, so big thanks to Moises Padilla and Jeff Eason. Moises was very comfortable with improvising subtle comments during the quiet section. They are both dynamite musicians.”
